A fishing hook is a device with a curved or hooked end used to catch fish and other animals. The simplest hooks were made of bone, shell, or stone, but modern hooks are now generally made of metal. A hook with a baited fishing line or other fish lure attached to it is known as a fish hook, and is a component of an artificial lure. A fisherman holding a hooked fish with a rod or a fishing line and rod, a fishing hook is often attached to the end of a line or a lure.
Fishing hooks are made by hand or machine to several basic designs, and may be fitted with barbs (hooks without a barb are called bare hooks). The barb of the hook is usually bent forward so that when a fish is hooked it will swim away hooked and not easily release itself.
Hooks may also be designed with a swivel, which allows the hook to be turned on its shank and thus swing freely through the water, presenting a more natural movement and making the bait or lure seem to be alive. The eye of the hook may also be made of wire or metal which will bend if pulled on to prevent the hook from becoming unattached from the fishing line.
Hooks come in many sizes, ranging from large hooks used for catching big game fish such as marlin and tuna, to micro-hooks designed to be used with micro-thread and micro-jewel baits. Hooks are sold in boxes of several of the same size or several different sizes. The sizes used for baited hooks are traditionally described in hook sizes. For example, in the United Kingdom, a hook labeled No. 8 is about three times as big as a hook labeled No. 10.
In the USA, hooks are also sized from smallest (largest number) to largest (smallest number) in sizes that are approximately equal to the British sizes. For example, a size 10 is approximately equal to an 8 in the UK.
The hook size is determined by measuring the distance from the base of the hook's shank to the point, and dividing by a standard measurement, which was originally 37.5 millimeters (1.5 inches). The size of the hook thus depends on both the length of the hook and on the standard measurement used to define the hook size, so a size 10 hook from different manufacturers may vary slightly in length. The size number has no relation to the mass of the hook or to the amount of fish that can be caught with it.
